What does RAID provide?
RAID solution provides fault tolerance on hard drive storage subsystem on mission critical data storage applications, such as servers. Basically, no single hard drive failure can bring down the system. Your system will continue to function with degraded performance with any one single hard drive failure. It allows you ample time to replace the failed unit. However, it doesn't provide fault tolerance for more than one hard drive failure at the same time.

Is there any cost overhead on RAID?

Also, the wite and update performanc will be lowered by a small percentage depends on your systems I/O traffic charecteristics. Usually, you cannot detect the difference. On the contrast, you will notice an improvement of performance because the faster retrieval time.
